Game notes: Gilbert, the only Midlands team playing at home in Week 0, hosts Class 1A power Great Falls in the inaugural game at the school’s new, on-campus football stadium. … The Indians, fresh from their first winning season (7-5) since 1999, will build around a solid veteran core on defense and star running back Marco Anderson on offense. Anderson ran for 1,524 yards and 24 touchdowns a year ago after ringing up 1,373 yards and 20 TDs as a sophomore … Linebackers Cory Rish and Will Smith, who had 109 and 105 tackles, respectively, last season, are among the leaders on defense … The Red Devils returned to prominence in 2007, advancing to the 1A Division II championship game. GF dropped a 14-7 decision to Blackville-Hilda in its first title shot in 16 years. With 16 seniors comprising nearly half of the varsity roster, Great Falls has plenty of experience, if not much proven depth … Ken Schofield, a Gilbert graduate, is looking for his 99th win as the Red Devils coach. He is 98-68 in nine seasons in Great Falls.
Series history: This is the first regular-season meeting of the schools, but Great Falls was a 7-0 when it faced Gilbert in the 1A state quarterfinals in 1987.
