Football: Ridge View at Irmo

Site: W.C. Hawkins Stadium. Time: 7:30 p.m.

Irmo notes: Irmo running back Mustafa Greene is man the Ridge View defense must stop. The junior star is coming off a 1,753-yard rushing season with 15 touchdowns … Brian Hill makes his debut as Irmo’s undisputed starting quarterback after sharing time with departed Leander Barney a year ago … Irmo defensive end Jimmy Carson was outstanding a year ago with 72 tackles, two fumble recoveries and 14 quarterback pressures … The Jackets are coming off a 10-3 campaign and have gone 64-18 over the last six seasons with five double-digit win hauls … Getting the season off on the right note has been a tradition under Bob Hanna. Irmo is 11-3 in season-opening game since Hanna’s first season in command (1994). South Pointe, however, ended a string of seven straight Irmo Week 1 wins last season with a 13-10 triumph at Hawkins Stadium, no less.

Ridge View notes: The key to the Blazers success this season could hinge on the play of junior quarterback Jalen Perry, who takes over for two-year starter Cheston Hickman. Perry completed 18 of 32 passes for 266 yards and three touchdowns in limited varsity relief time last year … The good news is running back Bucky Kennedy and receiver Greg Adams return. Kennedy had two 1,000-yard rushing seasons on the books already, and Adams emerged as a go-to guy last season with 69 catches for 1,212 yards and 12 TDs … Defensive backs Stephan Batts and Alonzo Greene are veteran leaders on defense. Batts, who like Kennedy, has an offer on the table from the Air Force Academy, 38 tackles an six interceptions last season, while the physical Greene had a team-high 105 tackles … Ridge View is 6-6 in season openers through the years.

Series history: Irmo has pretty much had its way with the Blazers, winning eight of 10 meetings. The Yellow Jackets took a 20-10 decision last season after RV scored a 23-21 success in 2006.
