Spring Valley notes: The Vikings should have plenty of motivation in the opener. After all, the team is coming off the first winless season in school history and is mired in the longest losing in program annals – 12 straight setbacks … A little more luck could help. After all, nine of the 11 losses last year were by margins of eight points or less … Joe Cunningham, who shared time early with Rob Harding last year, has the quarterback position to himself this fall.
RNE notes: With 16 starters and 28 lettermen back for another go, the Cavaliers seem to be a lock to get back in the black in 2008 after two straight losing seasons. … Alexander Green returns at running back, and Derek Frost and Kersean Wilson will be part of a unique platoon system. They will rotate between the quarterback and wide receiver positions … Chris Bonds, one of the most ballyhooed defensive linemen in the nation, is the obvious headliner on defense … Season openers used to be a problem for the Cavs, but not in recent times. After winning just four of the first 16 season debuts, RNE is 11-3 in Week 1 outings since 1994. One of the losses was last year’s forfeit to Lexington.
Series history: RNE has a 19-13 lead in the original Northeast Richland series, starting with eight straight wins over the parent Vikings beginning in 1978. The teams have been trading victories since 1998, however, with the Cavaliers prevailing 28-22 a year ago.
