Preview: Dutch Fork girls cross country

Dutch Fork is looking to take the step up to the next level in girls cross country this season with a young, veteran team that finished 12th at the state meet last year - just one point behind archrival Irmo.

“The girls are much more dedicated and tougher mentally,” said veteran coach Catherine Lempesis. “The big thing now is the girls have to start believing in success.”

The top six runners return for another go at making the Top 10 state cut for the first time since 1997. The veterans include seniors Niki Klasnic and Akayla Grimes, juniors Samantha Hughes and Michelle Arms, sophomore Jesse Torres and freshman Carly Basinger.

Hughes led the Silver Foxes pack at state last year, placing 23rd.
