Football: Newberry at Broom

Site: Centurions Stadium. Time: Thursday, 7 p.m.

Newberry notes: The Bulldogs did not show much offensively in a 20-3 season-opening loss to neighboring Clinton … Quarterback Treyvon Smith had 184 yards passing in his first start at the position, but also threw two interceptions. The running game wasn’t much help. The Bulldogs managed a net of 31 yards on 16 attempts … Clinton piled up 292 rushing yards on 62 attempts and whopping time-of-possession advantage - 33 minutes to 15.

Broome notes: The Centurions are looking to drastically improve on last season disappointing 4-7 record in Todd Staley’s first year as the Broome head coach. Things did not go well in the season-opener, however. The Centurions were guilty of eight turnovers in a 33-14 loss to Class 4A York … Senior receiver/free safety Dijon Farr and defensive end Sheldon Long are players to watcn

Series history: Broome scored a 13-2 win last season to cut Newberry’s series lead to 8-6. The team were region rivals at the Class 3A level at various points between 1982 and 2003, and have met twice in the Class 2A playoffs after both schools dropped down in rank.
