Sumter notes: The Gamecocks turned in a rousing offensive performance in a season-opening 48-32 win over area rival Crestwood last week … Clemson-bound running back Roderick McDowell was in midseason form, getting the call 23 times and producing 170 yards rushing and scoring two touchdowns. McDowell ran for 1,399 yards last season and scored a total of 28 TDs … Veteran quarterback Stephen Curtis went 9-for-14 passing for 193 yards and teamed up with receiving Travis Fredimon for scores covering 51 and 60 yards. Fredimon finishing with three catches for 120 yards.
Startford notes: The Knights, coming of their worst season in 12 years (6-6), suffered its first season-opening loss since 1995 last week, dropping a 21-19 overtime decision to Orangeburg-Wilkinson. The O-W Bruins, by the way, have accounted for half of the six season-opening setbacks on the books at Stratford … Quarterback Tyler McDonald finished with 112 yards rushing and 110 yards passing and had a hand in all three Kingts TDs – two by land, one by air.
Series history: The Gamecocks dumped the Knights 27-10 last season to cut Stratford’s series lead to 5-4. The teams have split four regular season meetings, while the Knights have a 3-2 edge in state playoff confrontations.
