Game notes: First-year coach Ryan Russell has the numbers up, but the War Eagles still have a long way to go. W-S has not had a winning season since 1995 … The team went 3-7 last season and was shut out five times … Russell has the War Eagles operating out of the shotgun on offense, and installed a 3-5 defense … Things have not gone well in early losses to McCormick (40-0) and Whitmire (36-3).
Pelion notes: The Panthers (1-1) are looking to rebound from 47-21 loss to country rival Gilbert … Sean Davis did his part against the Indians, running for 116 yards and three touchdowns on 28 carries. The senior running back has 359 yards and four TDs on the books so far. He has also completed two passes for 34 yards … Sophomore quarterback Zach Adams has 140 yards passing … Chris Dillow leads the receiving corps with six catches for 106 yards … Junior linebacker Nick Gerity leads the hit parade with 15 tackles, followed by Ryan Rogers (13), Nick Johnson (13) and Will Spence (12) … Elizabeth Mitchum is 4-for-4 in PAT kicks and Adams is averaging 34.7 yards per punt.
Series history: When the teams were region foes in Class 1A, the War Eagles were dominant – winning 13 of 14 between 1982 and 1995. But the Panthers fortunes have reversed since moving up to the 2A level. Since 1996, Pelion has won nine of 10 games with the lone stumble during the span coming in 1999.
