Football: White Knoll at Airport

Site: Eagle Stadium. Time: 7:30 p.m.

White Knoll notes: The Timberwolves (1-1) pulled off a come-from-behind 21-20 overtime win last week at the Wolf Den over Lower Richland ... Trailing 14-0 in the third quarter, WK got on the board late in the third quarter with a scoring drive that featured two fourth-down conversion runs by freshman quarterback Stephen Cagle – the last going for a 1-yard scoring dive. Cagle later hit Hunter Counts with a 10-year scoring pass in overtime. Counts threw a touchdown pass to tight end Eric Huffman on a trick play in the fourth quarter. Skyler Walker’s three PAT kicks proved decisive … Counts and Tyler Wise shared offensive player of the game honors. Wise had 71 yards rushing on 18 carries and caught six passes for 61 yards … Everette Smith was the defensive player of the game with 11 tackles, and save the game with a tackle on LR’s two-point conversion bid in overtime.

Airport notes: The Eagles improved to 2-0 with an impressive 31-21 win over physical Lugoff-Elgin last week. Griffin Sims’ 42-yard field goal with 1:11 left in the fourth quarter broke a 21-21 deadlock, and soon thereafter Steven Gainey picked of a L-E pass and returned it for a score that put the verdict on ice. It was Airport’s ninth straight regular season win … For the season, junior quarterback W.T. Murden has completed 24 of 46 passes for 316 yards and five TDs, and gained 84 yards on the ground. Ryan Smith leads all Eagles runners with 124 yards on 22 carries. Derek Cushman is the top receiver to date with nine catches for 117 yards, and Tyler Sturkie has five grabs for 71 yards and a team-high two scoring catches … Senior linebacker Rashaad Hampton returned to the lineup last week and rang up 16 tackles. Miquel Cokely and Michael Matthews lead the team with 25 and 22 stops, respectively.

Series history: The series has been hotly contested from the start. White Knoll evened the set at 3-3 with a 17-14 last season. That was Airport’s only stumble during the regular season.
