Football: Gilbert at Chapin

Gilbert notes: Marco Anderson has had a great time through the years against neighboring Pelion Panthers, and that was the case last week in a 47-21 win. Anderson ran for 183 yards and three touchdowns in 17 carries, upping his season totals to 408 rushing yards and eight TDs … Adam Spires was 6-for-13 passing for 74 yards and one score … Cory Rish had 15 tackles vs. Pelion, and Josh Steele had 12 stops and two tackles for loss. Rish leads the team with 29 tackles through two games, and Steele is tied with Brandon Wooten for second on the hit list with 19 tackles … Gilbert (2-0) is off to its best start since 1999. The ’99 Indians also won their first two games, scoring 88 points in the two outings.

Chapin notes: The Eagles returned to action after a Week 1 bye and ripped Brookland-Cayce 56-26, breaking open a close contest with a 21-0 burst in the third quarter … It was the seventh highest scoring performance in school history, and the biggest point output since a 56-41 win over Saluda in 1996 … Senior quarterback Josh Miller leads the team in rushing and passing. He is 15 of 31 passing for 340 yards and four touchdowns, and has run for 104 yards on 18 carries … Neil Sawyer has been the top target so far with seven catches for 186 yards and three scores … On defense, John Sloan leads the way with 22 tackles, Ryan Elliott has 18 tackles and three tackles for loss and Adam Curtis has 10 tackles and two fumble recoveries.

Series history: Chapin has dominated the series from the start, winning 18 of the 26 games since the inaugural outing in 1982. The Eagles prevailed 44-41 in a wild affair last season. It was Chapin’s sixth straight win over the Indians.
