Chapin turned in another fine showing at the Coaches Classic Invitational on Saturday at Sandhills Research Park. The Eagles, in fact, against had the best overall Midlands performance at the annual early-season spotlight event on the state championship course.
The Chapin girls placed 10th in the elite International Division race, while the Eagles boys finished 11th. The girls team entered the meet ranked fifth in the most recent Class 3A coaches poll; the boys were ranked third.
Freshman Lannon McCoy led the Chapin girls, finishing 15th with a time of 20 minutes, 49 seconds. Senior Ashlee Wilson (42nd, 22:00), junior Olivia Bueno (46th, 22:08), senior Syndey Frontz (58th, 22:54) and junior Hannah Shull (77th, 23:38) fell into line behind McCoy.
Senior Eric Rice was the boys frontrunner, placing 20th with a time on 17:27. Senior Russell Baker (23rd, 187:30), sophomore Carson Barnes (31st, 17:40), and freshmen Heath Lorick (63rd, 18:25) and Michael Nichols (19:46) accounted for the rest of the Chapin points.
