Sumter notes: The Gamecocks (2-1) fell from the unbeaten ranks last week in a surprising 16-14 loss at home to Spartanburg … It was a strange game for Sumter from start to finish. The Gamecocks scored on their first play from scrimmage – a 21-yard scoring pass from Stephen Curtis to Travis Fredimon – after a 45-yard punt return by Timmy Rogers. Sumter had a 14-0 lead by the end of the first quarter, but did not score again. Oh, there were plenty of chances in the fourth quarter after Spartanburg took a 16-14 lead. The Gamecocks came up empty twice inside the Vikings 10 in the final frame, and Ross Watson missed a 22-yard field goal with 16 seconds to go.
White Knoll notes: The Timberwolves turned in a great defensive effort last week vs. Airport, but the host Eagles escaped with a 19-7 win … The only points in the first half came on two Airport field goals. WK took a 7-6 lead early in the fourth quarter when freshman Stephen Cagle located receiver Brandon Homa with a 23-yard scoring pass, followed by Skyler Walker’s PAT kick … But the Eagles responded with a long scoring drive to regain the lead and added an late insurance tally … Corey Holmes was the Alpha offensive player of the game. He had seven catches for graded out at 88% in blocking. Kevin Salinas was the defensive player of the game with three tackles, two tackles for loss and one quarterback pressure … Cagle is 24-for-44 passing for 286 yards and three TDs to date. Tyler Wise lead all WK runners with 106 yards on 33 totes. Hunter Counts tops the receivers with 12 catches for 90 yards and one TD, and Counts has 10 receptions for 128 yards … Eric Huffman is averaging 36.1 yards on 17 punts … Everette Smith led the Timberwolves on defense with 23 tackles, one ahead of Brandon Blume. Justin Goff, Clay Roland and Salinas all have three TFL.
