Spring Valley notes: The Vikings perked up offensive last week at Lexington after being shut out in the first two games of the season, but still came out on the short end of a 42-21 score … Jordan Jenkins scored Spring Valley’s first points of the season with a 1-yard run in the first quarter that cut the Lexington lead to 14-7. He added a 3-yard TD run in the second quarter to keep the Vikings within hailing distance at halftime. Quarterback Joe Cunningham hooked up with Jordan Giles with a 64-yard on a 64-yard scoring play in the third quarter … The defensive problems persist. SV surrendered 459 yards last week, 403 by land. The opposition point total after three games is 128 … The Vikings (0-3) have lost 15 games in a row.
Irmo notes: Irmo scored a significant 16-14 road win last week over Summerville at John McKissick Field. The field was wet and sloppy, but the outcome was beautiful to the Yellow Jackets, who improved to 2-1 … David Olson hit a 33-yard field goal in the first quarter, Dawan Scott scored on a 6-yard run that put Irmo ahead for good in the second quarter and quarterback Brian Hill’s 4-yard TD jaunt in the third quarter proved decisive … The win was all the more impressive considering star junior running back Mustafa Greene sat out with an injury. Green had 183 yards rushing in Irmo’s first two games … Hill has 123 yards rushing and 192 yards passing to date.
Series history: Irmo has steadily been chipping away at Spring Valley’s once formidable lead in the series. The Yellow Jackets have won five of the last six bouts with the Vikings, and eight of 11 since 1997. Spring Valley’s all-time advantage is down to 19-17.
