Football: Lower Richland at Airport

Lower Richland notes: The improved Diamond Hornets suffered their second straight heart-rending loss last week against Orangeburg-Wilkinson. The Bruins scored a 19-13 win at the Diamond Mine, dropping LR to 1-2 … Jason Leverett did most of the damage for the Bruins – running for 120 yards and passing for 230. He had an 80-yard scoring run and a 30-yard scoring pass.

Airport notes: The Eagles found themselves trailing host White Knoll 7-6 early in the fourth quarter, but pulled away to win 19-6 and improve to 2-1 … Quarterback W.T. Murden’s two scoring runs in the fourth quarter were the difference. Murden has been outstanding so far with 231 yards rushing and two TDs while completing 31 of 60 passes for 364 yards and five scores. The busy junior also is averaging 35.6 yards on 12 punts … Griffin Sims accounted for all the points in the first half with two field goals. He has yet to miss a field goal on three tries … Miquel Cokely leads the Eagles on defense with 34 tackles, but senior linebacker Rashaad Hampton is closing the gap after missing the first game of the season. In two games, the school’s career tackle leader has 29 stops … In other defensive items of note, L.A. Brown has two interceptions and Chris Phillips has two sacks.

Series history: Airport evened the series ledger at six wins apiece 28-16 Region 5-4A win in 2003 in the last meeting of the teams. LR ruled early in this on-again, off-again series by winning five of six outings between 1976 and 1997.
