Ninety Six notes: The Wildcats, former region rival of Newberry in 3-2A, is back down to Class 1A this season and is off to a 4-1 start under new coach Chris Liner, losing only to undefeated Abbeville. Ninety Six won just games last season … Last week the Wildcats thumped 2A Crescent 40-7 in Iva. Quarterback Parker Hite was the key man in the romp – running for 88 yards and four touchdowns while completing 8 of 12 passes for 116 yards.
Newberry notes: After scoring just 27 points in the first three games, the Bulldogs erupted offensively last week in a come-from-behind 36-33 win over Chapin. Newberry (2-2) darted to a 28-7 lead in the second quarter, only to see Chapin scored 26 unanswered points to take a 33-28 lead with 7:18 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs, however, responded quickly and regained the lead on a 56-yard scoring run by freshman Tyrone Neal and a two-point conversion pass from Treyvon Smith to Colby Rosemont … Newberry piled up a season-high 374 yards on the attack with 272 coming on the ground. Montagus Caldwell led the way with 138 yards on 13 carries, including scoring runs of 64 and 21 yards. Neal chipped in 69 yards and the winning tally on six totes and Marcus McMorris added 40 yards and one score on just four carries … Smith, who missed two games with an injury, is sharing quarterback duty with Lance Brehmer. The two combined for 102 passing yards vs. Chapin. Brehmer hit Sean Campos-McJunkins with a 36-yard scoring pass, while Smith went 7-for-9 for 60 yards.
Series history: Friday’s game marks the first non-region meeting of the teams. Newberry has a 3-1 lead in the series that began in 2004.
