Football: Chapin at Mid-Carolina

Chapin notes: The Eagles (2-2) rallied from a big early deficit to take the lead in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t maintain the advantage in what turned out to be a 36-33 loss last week to Newberry … The Eagles defense yielded 370 yards, including 267 on the ground, to a team that was struggling on offense … Offensively, the Josh Miller-to-Neil Sawyer connection was in the spotlight again. Miller and Sawyer hooked up on three scoring passes covering 43, 12 and 58 yards. Miller finished the game with 199 passing yards and the three scoring tosses for Sawyer and one scoring run that put the Eagles ahead 33-28 with 7:18 left to play. Sawyer finished with six catches for 172 yards … Miller is 32-for-69 passing for 708 yards and nine TDs. Sawyer has 16 catches for 459 yards and seven scores. Mickey Capers leads the team in rushing with 243 yards and two TDs with Miller at 240 yards and three scores … John Sloan tops the team with 40 tackles, and Ryan Elliott has 33 stops and five tackles for loss.

Mid-Carolina notes: The Rebels snapped a two-game losing skid last week with an impressive 35-0 rout of Pelion on homecoming … The M-C defense, which is allowing an average of just 11 points a game to date, posted its second shutout of the season, allowing the Panthers a paltry total of 91 offensive yards. Panthers star Sean Davis was limigted to a career-low 20 yards rushing on 19 carries. Davis had more than 200 yards while helping the Panthers score a Class 2A state-playoff upset last year … Malcome Jones, Seth Chick and Justin Lindler had big games on defense vs. Pelion. Jones had a game-high eight tackles, Chick had seven tackles and one tackle for loss and Lindler had five tackles, one TFL, two sacks and one quarterback pressure. For the season, Jones leads the team with 28 tackles, and Chick is second with 21 … Offensively, Krishawn Holey has 212 yards rushing and scored two touchdowns. Clarence Turner has 207 rushing yards and leads the team in scoring with four TDs. Quarterback Clay Hughes has connected on 15 of 46 passes for 233 yards and two scores.

Series history: The inter-county rivals will be meeting for the 40th year in a row in one of the few football series in the Midlands that has spanned the entire modern era that began in 1970 … The Eagles have a commanding 28-11 lead over the Rebels since 1970, and are currently on a 9-0 run. Mid-Carolina’s last success was a 33-13 win in 1998.
