Falcons drop OT thriller in Georgia

Ben Lippen turned a valiant effort against host Augusta Christian in the rain on Friday but came up short, 48-41, in a four-overtime SCISA Region 1-3A thriller.

Augusta Christian was lead by QB William Banks who scored on a 55-yard touchdown run that put the Lions on the scoreboard first. The Lions jumped out to a 13-point lead in the first quarter. The Falcons’ first scoring drive began with only seconds remaining in the first quarter - a five-play drive ending in a 45-yard sprint by WR Taylor Wilson after a screen pass from Joey Carter. Ben Lippen missed the extra point. The Lions fourth possession of the first half was halted by third-down tackle by Nathan Parrish for a 7-yard loss.

The next play launched the excitement-filled evening in earnest. On fourth-and-11, the Lions executed a fake punt with a 22-yard pass completion, keeping the drive going and ending with a 5-yard touchdown run. The Falcons final possession of the first half was a 10-play drive that ended on a forth-down attempt on the Lions 14-yard line.

Ben Lippen opened the second half kicking off the Lions as the rain began fade. The Lions traveled the length of the field on a seven-play drive that ended with Xan Mangum forcing a fumble on the Falcons 5-yard line, it was recovered by sophomore Jimmy Carlen. This would be the first of several defensive stands for the Falcons in the second half. An interception by Mangum late in the third quarter once again ended a Lions drive.

The Falcons hit pay dirt once again in the fourth quarter with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Jonathan Cochrane from Joey Carter, pulling BL Falcons within a touchdown. The Lions came right back with their only scoring drive of the second half with a 37-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 14 points. With 6:45 left in the fourth quarter the Falcons executed two scoring drives - an eight-play drive ending in a 3-yard rushing touchdown by Drew Stokes, followed by an 11-play drive ending with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Carter to Mangum. Jonathan Cochrane made both extra points to tie the game at 27-27. The Lions were stuffed by the Falcon defense on their final possession in regulation.

Both teams scored in the first overtime, AC with a 10-yard pass (extra point good) and Ben Lippen on a 20-yard run by Joey Carter (extra point good). In the second overtime it was much of the same with the Falcons scoring first on a 10 yard pass from Carter to Mangum (extra point good), and the Lions converting a third-down play for a 1-yard touchdown run (extra point good). The shootout continued into a third overtime with both teams attempting field goals. Mangum rushed through the Lion line to block their 18-yard attempt, Ben Lippen’s 25-yard attempt was wide right. In the fourth overtime, Augusta converted on third-down play again with a 1-yard touchdown run (extra point good). The Falcons final attempt ended with the Lions picking off a pass in the end zone.

Ben Lippen fell to 2-4 overall, 0-2 in region play. Augusta Christian improved to 5-1, 1-0.
