Richland NE notes: The Cavaliers (3-2, 1-0) opened Region 5-4A play with a 40-7 win over White Knoll and is seemingly back on track with two straight wins in the wake of back-to-back setbacks against Hartsville and Blythewood … Two touchdowns in a 1:05 span late in the first quarter set last week’s rout in motion. It began with a 25-yard scoring pass from Kersean Wilson to Kenny Upshaw at the 2:30 mark of the first quarter, and was followed by a 49-yard scoring jaunt by G.G. Greene with 25 seconds to go in the opening frame … The RNE offense finished with 311 yards, while the defense limited the visiting Timberwolves to a meager 99 offensive yards … Greene paced a 247-yard rushing attack with 147 yards on 16 carries. Wilson went 6-for-7 passing for 68 yards and two scores … To date, Greene has 483 yards and four TDs on 93 carries. Wilson is 48-for-81 passing for 578 yards and seven scores. Upshaw leads all RNE receivers with 13 catches for 242 yards and two TDs. Upshaw and Wilson share the team scoring lead with 30 points apiece. Upshaw had two touchdown catches, one scoring run and two punt return TDs.
Lexington notes: The Wildcats (4-1, 1-0) rebounded smartly from a blowout loss to Dorman, opening Region 5-4A play with a hard-fought 22-19 road win over Aiken. It was the Green Hornets’ first setback of the season … Lexington put together a decisive 16-play, 65-yard scoring drive with time waning after Aiken took a 19-14 lead with 9:34 to play. The ‘Cats converted two fourth-down plays along the way, the last being a 5-yard pass from Trad Hunter to Reese Taylor for the winning touchdown with 2:04 to go … Anthony Carden had 107 yards rushing and one TD vs. Aiken, upping his season stat line to 698 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns on 134 carries. The gritty senior has 12 TDs and 72 points to date. Hunter is 27-for-59 passing for 248 yards and three scores.
Series history: Officially, Lexington has one win on the books in 10 outings against the Cavaliers, but the Wildcats have never actually beaten RNE on the field. Last season Lexington was awarded a forfeit win when the Cavs inadvertently dressed an ineligible player. Friday’s game marks the first-ever region meeting of the schools.
