Football: Saluda at Newberry

Saluda notes: The Tigers (3-2) closed out non-region testing with a sloppy 9-0 win over Class 1A McCormick. It was the second win a row for Saluda, which scored a 16-13 win at Walhalla on Sept. 19 when sophomore Brandon Parker kicked a 20-yard field goal with five seconds remaining … Parker got the call from the junior varsity team after the Tigers dropped a 20-19 decision to Ninety Six because of two missed PATs and a wayward field goal attempt.

Newberry notes: The undulating nature of Newberry season continued in the raid last week in a 13-12 loss to Class 1A and former Region 3-2A rival Ninety Six. The Bulldogs took a 12-7 lead with 6:30 left in the game on a 28-yard scoring run by freshman Tyrone Neal, and had a chance to run out the clock after the defense held on the ensuring Ninety Six possession. But a fumble gave the Wildcats new life and the hosts cashed in with 42 seconds to go to escape with the win … The Bulldogs finished with 210 yards rushing, with Neal in the lead with 81 yards on 12 carries. But Newberry fumbled nine times, losing three … Montagus Caldwell leads the team with 281 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 50 totes, and Neal stands at 225 yards and two TDs on 36 carries.

Series history: Newberry leads the on-again, off-again series by an 11-7 margin. The teams were once region rivals at the Class 3A level (1970-75). Newberry is 4-0 in the series since joining the Tigers in Region 3-2A in 2004.
