Heathwood Hall notes: The Highlanders scored yet another tight win over a quality foe last week, topping Wilson Hall 21-16 by knocking down potential scoring passes in the end zone on the visiting Barons’ final two offensive plays … This week provides the chance for Heathwood Hall (4-1, 1-0) to break out of the third-place rut it has been mired in for the past two seasons in SCISA Region 1-3A. If the Highlanders prevail across the state line, it sets up a championship showdown on Oct. 10 with archrival Hammond … Not surprisingly, Mac Whalen was a central figure in the win. The junior quarterback rang up 118 yards rushing and completed 15 of 29 passes for 194 yards and three touchdowns. Morgan Whalen grabbed six of the throws for 118, Davis Ray had four catches for 40 yards and one TD and Jack Moorman had four catches for 80 yards and two scores.
Augusta Christian notes: The Lions (5-1, 1-0) turned away Ben Lippen 48-41 in a wild four-overtime vicrtory in their region opener last week … William Banks, a receiver who caught 30 passes last season as AC advanced to the SCISA championship game for the third year in a row, has been used all over the field in AC’s new spread offense – at quarterback, running back and receiver.
Series history: The Highlands prevailed in the first two encounters with the Lions from Georgia, but AC has evened the series with back-to-back wins in 2006 and 2007.
