Fairfield Central notes: The Griffins enter Region 4-3A play with a 4-1 record and riding a three-game winning streak. FC, which is averaging 43.5 points in its four wins, scored an impressive 42-14 road win over Ridge View last week … The rout of the Blazers featured the skills of quarterback Justin Trapp and receiver McKendrix Thompson. Trapp hit 10 of 16 tosses for 180 yards and three touchdowns. Thompson was on the other end of six passes, netting 135 yards and two scores. Greg Gadsden led the running game with 82 yards and one TD on 18 carries … Ralph Cooper, Mike Irby and Michael Hopkins all had six tackles on defense vs. RV. Irby’s haul included two tackles for loss, while Hopkins had two TFL, one sack and a fumble recovery. Cooper blocked a Blazers punt. But the headliner was Tavon Bouknight, whe led the team with seven tackles and intercepted two RV passes, returning one for a touchdown.
Chester notes: The Cyclones, who made it to the Class 3A championship game last season, are off to a 2-3 start under new coach Maurice Flowers … Sophomores Tony McNeal and Julius Pendergrass are two key components in Chester’s potent attack. McNeal is 91-for-167 passing for 1443 yards and 18 touchdowns in his first season as the starting quarterback. Pendergrass, who led the team in rushing last season as a freshman, has 372 yards and five TDs on 62 carries so far. The Cyclones deep receiving corps features seniors Fred Lee (30 catches-431 yards-9 TDs) and Jeremy Hughes (24-513-6) … The big difference this season has been the inconsistent play on defense, which took a serious graduation hit last year. Chester has surrendered seven points in its two wins, a total of 113 in the three losses.
Series history: Fairfield Central has a commanding 12-5 lead in the series, but things have certainly changed of late. The Cyclones have taken the last two contests by 32-26 and 16-12 margins.
