Football: Lower Richland at Fairfield Central

Lower Richland notes: The Diamond Hornets (3-3, 1-0) scored a 19-3 win over A.C. Flora last week in their official Class 3A debut. The success was the first for LR in a region opener since 1998. Moreover, the Diamond Hornets are not in the red six games into the season for the first time since 1996 … LR rolled up 370 yards on the attack and the Falcons in it Region 4-3A debut. Quarterback Nicholas Smith connected on 13 of 19 passes for 153 yards and one touchdown, and the balanced running game produced 211 yards with a 6.2 yard-per-carry average. Mykell Jacobs was the nominal lead with 74 yards on eight carries. Brandon Wilkerson was the top receiver with six catches for 68 yards and one TD. On defense, Hayward Martin and Gary Castro led the way with 14 and nine tackles, respectively … It was the second time this season the LR defense did not allow a touchdown, but failed to post a shutout. LR’s last shutout win was in 2002 … Keith Skerritt lead the Diamonds in rushing with 342 yards and three TDs on 51 carries. Smith is 47-for-81 passing for 613 yards and one score. Wilkerson leads the receiving corps with 23 catches for 261 yards and one TD. Hayward’s 96 tackles tops the LR hit list, and Castro is next with 62 stops. In other stats of note on defense, Larry Hunter has 51 tackles and a team-high four sacks, and Devante Wright has four interceptions.

Fairfield Central notes: The Griffins (4-2, 0-1) fell 21-18 to host Chester last week in the Region 4-3A opener for both teams. The Cyclones surprised the Griffins by running the ball for a season-high 190 yards in the game, including a 14-play drive in the fourth that did not produce points, but one that stalled out at the FC 9-yards line with just 1:38 remaining in the game. By that time, the Griffins had no more times outs left … Danny Miller led a surge that drew FC pull within 21-18 with just under nine minutes remaining in the game after Chester expanded its led to 21-6 in the third quarter. Miller completed 11 of 15 passes for 119 yards in place of starter Justin Trapp, including a 10-yard scoring toss to McKendrix Thompson with 8:52 to go that proved to be the final points of the contest … Miller has been amazingly accurate to date, completing 37 of his 50 throws 425 yards and five touchdowns with just one interception … Greg Gadsden ran for 87 yards and two scores vs. Chester, and has 485 yards and six TDs to date on the books … Thompson had six receptions vs. Chester to up his season receiving totals to 25 catches for 448 yards and eight scores … Tavon Bouknight and Jordan Belton had 11 tackles apiece last week. Bouknight also chipped in one sack and one tackle for loss. Roman Broome had two sacks on the night.

Series history: The series resumes for the first time in 13 years, and pits former high school teammates on the opposite sidelines – LR’s J.W. Montgomery and FC’s Reggie Kennedy. The two helped East Clarendon bag the Class 1A state championship in 1985 under coach Mickey Moss. The Diamonds won six in a row between 1988 and 1993, but the Griffins scored wins in the last two contests in 1994 and 1995 under coach Buddy Pough.
