Football: Newberry at Gilbert

Site: Leonard Price Field. Time: 7:30 p.m.

Storyline: Fresh from a historic win over Batesburg-Leesville, Gilbert is looking to go 2-0 in region play for the first time since 1999. On the other hand, Newberry is looking to avoid its first 0-2 region start since 1999.

Newberry notes: The Bulldogs pulled within 28-26 of Saluda on a 12-yard scoring run by Marcus McMorris in last week’s Region 3-2A opener, but failed to convert a two-point conversion try … Even with leading rushing Montagus Caldwell sitting out with an injury, Newberry still managed 199 yards rushing and quarterback Lance Brehmer hit 10 of 19 passes for 109 yards. The bottom line, however, was the Bulldogs turned the ball over four times … The Bulldogs (2-4, 0-1) are off to their worst start since winning only two of their first seven games in 1999.

Gilbert notes: Marco Anderson piled up 179 yards on 27 carries, including an 80-yard touchdown run, in last week’s 21-20 overtime win over long-time tormentor Batesburg-Leesville. Both Anderson tallied came in regulation, but the winning points in OT came on a 10-yard scoring pass from Adam Spiers to Dylan Skinner and a successful PAT kick by sophomore Chip Sox … A significant win? You bet. It was only the second success by the Indians against the Panthers in 24 tries, and ended an 18-game losing streak vs. B-L dating back to 1981 … Veteran linebacker Cory Rish had 17 tackles (10 unassisted) and recovered a fumble to lead the way on defense … Anderson is closing in on his third straight 1,000-yard rushing season. He stands at 904 yards with 17 touchdowns on 110 carries. Spiers is 55-for-103 passing for 614 yards and six scores. Cameron Winchester is the top receiver with 17 catches for 238 yards and three TDs, while Skinner had 14 receptions for 208 yards and two tallies … Rish is at the top of the season tackle chart with 71 stops. Will Smith has 55 tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack and two interceptions.

Series history: Friday’s clash marks the first time the schools have met in a region or a regular season game, but the Indians don’t need an introduction. Newberry, after all, sent Gilbert packing with a 23-19 win in the first round of state playoffs last year in the final varsity game staged at old Tomahawk Stadium.
