Football: Crestwood at Marlboro County

Site: McAlpine Stadium. Time: 7:30 p.m.

Storyline: With defending state champion Wilson declared ineligible for its part in a post-game brawl with Lake City in the first week of the season, Friday’s game in Bennettsville becomes, in essence, the showdown for the Region 6-3A championship. Both Crestwood and Marlboro County stand at 5-1 overall, 1-0 in region play. Crestwood has out-scored the opposition 189-100 to date; Marlboro County is at 172-102.

Marlboro County notes: The Bulldogs opened region play with a 26-18 win over Darlington last week. Tyreek Townsend ran for 108 yards and one touchdown, and quarterback Elliot Alford hit on 12 of 22 passes for 195 yards and one TD, and had one scoring run … Kris Pankey and Lakeem Moore block punts in the game. Pankey returned his rejection for a touchdown … The MC attack has been remarkably balanced with 1311 yards rushing and 1202 yards passing. Townsend has 1001 yards and 10 TDs on 121 carries. Alford has 145 yards rushing and three scores, while completing 66 of 129 passes for 1005 yards and 10 TDs with just three interceptions. Kinsman Thomas is the go-to receiver with 22 catches for 421 yards and six scores … Lateek Townsend, Taniq Edwards and Thomas Teal lead the fast Bulldogs defense. Townsend has a team high 78 tackles, Edwards had 58 stops and Teal has 44 tackles, five tackles for loss and three sacks … Dean Boyd is 106-40 in his 12 seasons at MC, including 15-0 Class 4A Division II state championship seasons in 1998 and 2001. But the Bulldogs have not made it past the third round of the playoffs since dropping down to 3A in 2006.

Crestwood notes: The Knights hammered Camden 35-7 in the region opener for its fifth straight win … The Wilson brothers were at it again. Terrence Wilson ran for 212 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries, while quarterback Treginald Wilson had 122 yards rushing and two TDs on just eight totes and his one pass completion went for a 50-yard gain … The defense limited Camden to a meager 73 offensive yards, Na’Im Johnson led the way with 16 tackles. Marquise Parker had 10 tackles, one sack and one interception. Javon Weston chipped in nine tackles, and Xavier Dinkins had two of the Kinghts four pass thefts … Terrence Wilson now has 911 yards rushing and 13 TDs on the books. Treginald Wilson has 523 yards and eight scores on the ground. But his passing numbers are most interesting – his six completions to date have netted 256 yards and two scores. That’s an average per completion of 42.7 yards.

Series history: The Bulldogs have mastered the Knights through the years, winning seven of the eight games since the series began in 1998. The schools have met as non-region foes, and as region rivals on the 4A and 3A levels. Crestwood’s lone success vs. MC came in 2003. The Bulldogs scored a 42-14 rout last season.
