Spring Valley notes: The Vikings’ losing streak reached 18 games last week in a 34-6 non-region loss to Sumter … Spring Valley (0-6) has not prevailed since handing Richland Northeast a 31-7 setback in the final regular-season game in 2006 … The offensive woes continued for the Vikings vs. Sumter. SV managed only 131 offensive yards and the lone touchdown came on a scoring pass from Joe Cunningham to Jordan Giles.
Blythewood notes: The Bengals return to action after a bye week gave them nearly two full weeks of preparation for their first-ever Class 4A region game … After being hammered by Fairfield Central and Crestwood in the first two games of the season the Bengals were facing the prospect of a disastrous season after winning 24 of 25 games in their first two varsity campaign. But things have changed dramatically since that halting start, thanks to the play of the Blythewood defensive unit, led by veteran defensive end Justin Anderson … The Bengals (3-2) enter their 4A region inaugural riding a three-game winning streak – a run that produced back-to-back shutout triumphs over Dutch Fork (20-0) and Lower Richland (23-0) after breaking out of the first “slump” in program history with a 12-7 upset over Richland Northeast … Blythewood has not surrendered an offensive touchdown since the fourth quarter of the Crestwood game in Week 2 – a school-record scoreless span of 147 minutes … Anderson, who has started every game in school history (39 in all) since the 2005 junior varsity-only season, has 25 tackles, six tackles for loss, six quarterback hurries, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one blocked kick so far. He led the pass rush against Dutch Fork that led to in four interceptions by Bengals … The offense show some life vs. Lower Richland as C.J. Edwards ran for 170 yards and three TDs.
Series history: Friday’s game is the first varsity football game involving the Richland 2 district schools. That will make Blythewood’s assimilation complete. The third-year Bengals have already squared off against Ridge View and Richland Northeast.
