Volleyball: Ridge View defeats South Pointe in Region 4-4A match

The Ridge View Blazers volleyball team played their fourth Region 4-4A match on Thursday, 10/02/08, against the South Pointe Stallions in Rock Hill. The Blazers were able to defeat the Stallions 3-1 (17-25, 25-13, 25-15, 25-22) to go to 10-3 overall and 3-1 in the region, but it was not without a few anxious moments.

South Pointe came out in the first set playing tough, especially on the defensive side of the ball, and took set 1 relatively easily at 25-17. The early part of set 2 stayed close with Ridge View holding a slight 10-8 lead, then the Blazers went on a run, scoring 15 of the last 20 points to win 25-13, with senior outside hitter Lauren Fink serving the last 7 consecutive points of the match. Set 3 started the same way the 2nd set ended with Ridge View jumping out to a commanding 11-1 lead, behind 7 consecutive service points from junior setter Megan Woodall, including 2 aces. Ridge View went on to win the 3rd set comfortably 25-15. The fourth set stayed close throughout, with the Stallions maintaining a late 22-21 lead, but the Blazers would finish strong, scoring the last 4 points of the match to win 25-22 behind clutch serving from sophomore middle blocker Keyaira Stevenson serving the final 3 points for Ridge View.

Junior outside hitter Hannah Cox had a big night for Ridge View, as she tied for the team lead in kills with 13, and also made 10 defensive digs. Keyaira Stevenson in the middle also put down 13 kills, and had 2 solo blocks at the net. Lauren Fink joined in with 10 kills from the outside, and equaled that number with 10 digs. Megan Woodall let the hitters go to work collecting 40 assists in the match, and also played the defensive end with 16 digs. Senior middle blocker Shatoya White banged out 9 kills, and a pair of aces. Woodall, Fink, and Stevenson spent a lot of quality time behind the line during the match, with Woodall having 24 serve attempts, Fink with 17, and Stevenson with 15. The defensive specialists lived up to their titles with senior Vanessa Woods making 13 defensive digs, while junior Ryann Dopp added 10.

This leaves Ridge View and Blythewood tied for 2nd in Region 4-4A at 3-1, with the tie to be broken on Tuesday night when the two teams play each other at Ridge View.
