Football: Wilson at Crestwood

Site: District 2 Memorial Stadium. Time: 7:30 p.m.

Storyline: Friday’s game was one that was circled on many a football fan’s calendar back in August – a Region 6-3A heavyweight showdown between defending state champion Wilson and Crestwood. The teams met two times last season. Crestwood prevailed 37-32 during the 6-3A campaign, but Wilson turned the tables on the Knights in a 34-28 win in the Lower State championship game. But the luster is gone now that Wilson has been banned from competing for a region or a state title after taking part in a post-game brawl with Lake City in the 2008 season open.

Wilson notes: Wilson is 2-0 against Region 6 foes, 4-3 overall … The Tigers rolled up 429 offensive yards in a 40-7 rout of Camden last week. Quarterback Richard Cue ran for 72 yards and one touchdown and was 10-for-22 passing for 193 yards and two scores. Receiver Caleb Davis had four catches for 140 yards and two TDs … On defense, Traneir Fraiser had nine tackles and two sacks, and Rodrea’ Brown had four tackles and recovered two fumbles. The Tigers limited the Bulldogs to 181 offensive yards.

Crestwood notes: The Knights (6-1, 2-0) took a commanding position in the Region 6-3A title race with a wild, 38-35 win over Marlboro County last week in Bennettsville. Crestwood built an 18-6 lead by halftime and upped the advantage to 24-6 in the third quarter, but needed two touchdowns in the final 4:18 of the game to escape with the decision … After MC rallied to take over the lead at 28-24, Michael Portee’s 56-yard interception return put Crestwood back in front with 4:18 remaining. The host Bulldogs then drove for the go-ahead touchdown. On the ensuing kickoff, Crestwood quarterback ripped off a 94-yard return to the MC 1-yard line, setting up a game-winning, 1-yard scoring run by Robert Simon. MC’s last chance was extinguish by Isaiah Young’s interception – the third pick of the game by the Knights … Terrence Wilson had 135 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 18 carries, upping his season totals to 1046 yards and 15 TDs. Simon had 46 yards and two tallies … The Crestwood passing game was productive, if not prolific. Treginald Wilson’s two completions on three attempts netted two touchdowns. He had scoring strikes of 29 yards to Damone Pringle and 25 yards to Randy Moulds. Moulds threw for a 24-yard gain on a trick play … Na’Im Johnson led the way on defense with 14 tackles and two tackles for loss. Darius Wallace and Javon Weston had two TFL and two sacks apiece.

Series history: Crestwood has won three of the four regular-season meetings, but is 0-1 vs. the Tigers in the state playoffs.
