Tennis: Highlanders, Cardinals advance to SCISA semifinals

Heathwood Hall and Cardinal Newman travel to the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter on Friday for semifinal matches in the Class 3A girls tennis playoffs.

Defending champion Heathwood Hall, which opened the playoffs with a 6-3 win at home against Porter-Gaud on Wednesday, takes on Pinewood Prep at 3 p.m. The Highlands nipped the Panthers 5-4 in tough regular-season match in Summerville on Oct. 2. Pinewood breezed by Wilson Hall 8-1 in quarterfinal play.

Heathwood received singles wins from Catherine Roach at No. 1, Lauren Armstrong at No. 2, Caroline Lough at No. 3 and Katherine Lough at No. 4, along with clinching doubles triumphs by Roach and Armstrong and Caroline Lough and Karson Kocher.

Cardinal Newman squares off against Ashley Hall at 3 p.m. The Cardinals downed Laurence Manning 5-1 in the quarterfinals on Wednesday thanks to singles wins by Toni Augusta at No. 1, Evan Black at No. 2, Andrea Martin at No. 3, Alex August at No. 4 and Kelsey Zokan at No. 6. Ashley Hall blanked Hammond 9-0 in the quarterfinals.

The championship match is set for 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at the same site.
