Rock Hill moves to 6-0 in Region 4-4A with win over Ridge View

The Ridge View Blazers volleyball team played host to the Rock Hill Bearcats on Thursday, 10/09/08 in a Region 4-4A match. The Bearcats came into this match with a 18-5 overall record, 5-0 in the Region, and ranked 4th in the state in the SC PrepCountry coaches' poll.

Set 1 stayed close with Rock Hill maintaining a 3 point lead at 18-15, but the Blazers scored 6 of the next 9 points to tie the score at 21 to the delight of the home crowd. Ridge View then gave themselves an advantage to take the set by taking a late 23-22 lead, but as top teams do, the Bearcats closed out the set by scoring the next 3 points, overtaking the Blazers in a very exciting 25-23 finish. In set 2, both teams traded mini-runs of 3 or 4 points, while Rock Hill built a slight lead at 15-13. The Bearcats continued to win big points to halt Blazer rallies, and pulled away late for a 25-19 win. Set 3 started close tied at 7-7, but the Bearcats turned on the heat as they cruised to a 25-13 victory for the 3-0 sweep (25-23, 25-19, 25-13).

Even though it was a straight-set victory for Rock Hill, sets 1and 2 were hard-fought sets with quality volleyball from both sides. Rock Hill showed why they have been a 'Top 5' team all season, as they would play their best volleyball late in sets to close things out. The Bearcats are a balanced, deep team that performed well in every aspect of the game from serving, passing and hitting to blocking and digging.

Ridge View played quite well for most of this match, staying right with Rock Hill in the first 2 sets, but the Bearcats had a little too much to offer at the end. Rock Hill setter, Karlee DuBard had a big day as she collected 25 assists, 4 kills, and 3 service aces. For Ridge View, junior outside hitter Hannah Cox had a team-leading 8 kills, also adding a pair of service aces. Senior outside hitter Lauren Fink lead the team in digs with 13. Junior setter Megan Woodall distributed 21 assists, also coming up with 12 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Keyaira Stevenson put away 7 kills, and had 2 solo blocks at the net.

The loss drops the Blazers' overall mark to 11-5, and 3-3 in the region.
