Clemson’s Sandhills Research Park in Northeast Columbia will be a busy place on Saturday with the running of state cross country qualifying meets in three classifications.
Action begins with the Class 4A Mid-State girls qualifier at 9 a.m., followed by the boys 4A race at 9:30. Class 3A qualifying is next with the girls getting underway at 10, the boys at 10:30. The Class 2A/1A girls qualifier begins at 11 with the Class 2A boys at 11:30.
This is the first year for the new Class 4A qualifying format. In the past, teams and individuals advanced to state based on results at the various region championship meets. Now, 4A spots are earned at three different qualifying meets – Upper State, Mid-State and Lower State.
The Mid-State affair features teams from Region 4 and Region 5. The top five boys and girls finishers will represent the Mid-State at the state finals on the same course on Nov. 8.
