Wildcats blank James Island in 4A volleyball playoffs

Lexington downed visiting James Island 3-0 in the second round of the Class 4A state volleyball playoffs on Thursday. The Wildcats (15-2) will travel to face Summerville (18-6) in a Lower State semifinal match on Tuesday.

Kellie Schmidt had another fine outing for Lexington vs. James Island with 19 kills, two assists, three digs and one ace. Setter Laura Grace Swindler has 29 assists, two kills, one digs and three aces. Lauren Owen and Kinsley Wade were outstanding on defense with seven and nine digs, respectively. Owen also chipped in seven kills, one assist and one ace. In the middle, Jennifer Hoppe had two kills and two blocks, while Katie McCollough chipped in three blocks.

Lexington has won 15 straight non-tournament matches since opening the season with setbacks against Blythewood and Aiken.

Region 5-4A rival Aiken faces Wando in the other Lower State semifinal match next week.
