Junior Jamie Sires and eighth-grader Megan Stahlberger helped Airport advance two teams to the Class 3A state cross country championship meet, set for Saturday at Sandhills Research Park.
Sires helped the Eagles boys team finish in third place at last week’s Lower State qualifying gathering at Sandhills with a fourth-place performance and a time of 16 minutes, 58.19 seconds. Stahlberger, meanwhile, placed eighth with a time of 20:22.66 to help the Airport girls to a sixth-place finish.
This is the second year in a row that both Airport teams have made the state cut.
Willie Cox (11th, 17:36.03), Joshua Williams (12th, 17:38.41), Ryan Day (47th, 19:12.75) and Wesley Ringo (53rd, 19:25.54) provide support for Sires. Stahlberger was backed up by MC Driggers (22nd, 22:05.99), Elizabeth Eskridge (43rd, 23:50.45), Savannah Austin (52nd, 24:01.20 and Rachel Harmon (55th, 24:21.65).
