Dreher’s boys and girls cross country teams have qualified for the Class 3A championship meet for the 10th season in a row. The Blue Devils boys and girls squads will be at the starting line on Saturday at Sandhills Research Park as they have been every year since 1999.
The girls team, led by seventh-grader Ashbrook Gwinn, had the better showing last week at the 3A Lower State qualifying meet at Sandhills. Gwinn nipped teammate Allyson Hill for fourth place in individual matters, and both young runners helped Dreher finish in third place as a team with a score on 91 points, just three behind runner-up Bluffton. Hilton Head, the No. 1 team in the latest coaches association poll, finished with 32 poits to run away with the title.
Gwinn had a personal-best, national elite time of 19:43.84, shaving nearly a full minute off her previous low time of 20:39 established at the Region 5-3A championship meet. Hill, a sophomore, was fifth in 20:17.27. Freshman Karina Colon just missed cracking the Lower State Top 10, finishing 11th in 20:52.24. Junior Ana Suarez (35th, 23:10.62) and senior Alanti McGill (36th, 23:13.01) were Dreher’s other scoring runners.
Senior Tanner Dalton led the Blue Devils boys to a fifth-place team finish, placing 13th in 17:40.98. Junior Collin Glass (18th, 18:01.15), freshman Julian Scott (33rd, 18:41.01), sophomore Quayshun Hawkins (36th, 18:48.22) and junior Alaric Bruce (41st, 18:55.64) accounted for the rest of the scoring.
