Seniors Ryan Moran set the pace as Spring Valley’s boys cross country team maintained its protracted Top 10 stay in Class 4A state meet standings with a ninth-place finish at the season finale at Sandhills Research Park.
It was the 11th consecutive Top 10 finish for the Vikings since they missed the state cut in 1997.
Moran fell just two spots short of going out as an all-state runner. The team leader ended up 17th with a time of 16 minutes, 59 seconds. Senior Jonathan Hanson (40th, 17:24), sophomore William Ivey (45th, 17:28) and juniors Matt Johnson (61st, 17:43) and Zach Parker (100th, 18:19) were Spring Valley’s other scoring runners.
On the other hand, the Vikings girls finished 17th to miss the Top 10 cut for the first time since 2001. Sophomore Emily Bakaj was the frontrunner, placing 38th with a time of 20:39.
