Hillcrest notes: The Rams (2-9) are huge underdogs in the Class 4A Division I playoff opener. Hillcrest went 0-5 and finish last in Region 2-4A after beating T.L. Hanna in its final non-region tune-up … Quarterback Tony Thompson and receiver Patrick Neely are the Rams’ most reliable offensive weapons. Michael Rose has been solid on defense … Hillcrest is assured of having its 10th consecutive losing season … The Rams have lost 18 straight playoff games since winning its first-ever postseason outing in 1978 – a 34-14 Class 3A verdict over Strom Thurmond.
Irmo notes: The Yellow Jackets (9-2) closed out the regular season with five straight wins to secure the Region 5-4A championship, and with junior Mustafa Greene back in the pink, Irmo may well be in for a long playoff run … Greene returned to full-time duty after being shelved with a shoulder injury in Week 7, just in time for a key match-up against Lexington. Greene’s tally over the final four games is quite impressive – 736 yards and 10 touchdowns … If needed, sophomore Dawan Scott, who filled in capably for Greene, has proven he can do the job. He had 10 TDs on the books … Irmo has been a playoff team for 31 seasons in a row. The last time the Jackets packed it in early was in 1977 … Irmo’s all-time playoff record is 33-34.
Series history: Irmo thumped the Rams from Simpsonville 59-0 in the first round of the 4A Division I playoffs in the only previous meeting of the teams.
