Pinewood Prep notes: After getting off to a halting start with three losses in their first four games, Pinky Guerard’s talented Panthers have reeled off six straight wins, including a 55-7 thrashing of Heathwood Hall in last week’s SCISA Class 3A playoff opener … With HH quarterback Mac Whalen gone from the scene after suffering an ankle injury early in the second quarter, PP quarterback Bruce Haynes had the spotlight to himself. Haynes hit 10 of 16 passes for 154 yards and four touchdowns, and ran for 73 yards and two scores. The Panthers finished with 453 offensive yards … Haynes and receiver Laquan Gilliard are the players Hammond must stop. Gilliard had four catches for 74 yards and three TDs last week … The Panthers opened the season with a 35-20 loss at Hammond.
Hammond notes: The two-time defending SCISA champion Skyhawks (10-1) thumped Porter-Gaud 34-6 in first-round action last week. It was Hammond’s seventh straight postseason win, and kept alive a home-field winning streaking dating back to 2005 … Since losing to Ben Lippen on Oct. 3, the Skyhawks have won five games in a row, piling up 211 points along the way … The offensive yield against the Cyclones was 472 yards – 247 by land, 225 by air. Brad Meredith ran for 127 yards and one touchdown on 20 carries. Kyle George had 67 yards rushing and one TD and caught four passes for 33 yards. Cliff Ayers was 18-for-25 passing for 225 yards and three scores. Aaron Walters went over the 1,000-yard mark with eight catches for 104 yards and two scores. Tight end A.D. Briggs had one catch, good for a 5-yard score … The defense, led by Will Patterson, just missed ringing up its second straight shutout … Hammond is 35-2 since the fun began in 2006.
