The Hammond volleyball team enjoyed surprising success in what ostensibly was to have been a rebuilding season in 2008. The Skyhawks finished with a 10-5 overall record and had a 7-3 mark in SCISA Region 2-3A.
“What should have been a rebuilding year turned into a strong showing with a No. 2 region finish behind St Joseph’s, and a fifth place finish in the state tournament,” said coach Andy Edgren. “Some young talent, including returning starters sophomore setter Kaki Smith, sophomore middle hitter Elaine Epting, junior outside hitter Sophia Chen, junior defensive specialist Katie Hood, and junior defensive specialist Amber Bennett, should make for be a great start to next year’s squad.”
Smith was named to the all-region team.
The Skyhawks lose four senior regulars – middle hitter Lizzy Bakhaus, right side hitter Liesel Hamilton, Libero Sally Mills and outside hitter Sarah Prickett. Prickett will be the toughest veteran to replace. She was an all-region, all-state selection this season.
