Richland NE notes: The Cavaliers (8-4) dumped Region 5-4A rival Aiken for the second time this season in last week’s Class 4A Division II playoff opener. It was the first state playoff win for RNE since 2005 … Senior Gee Gee Greene ran for 170 yards and one touchdown to headline the 24-7 conquest of the Green Hornets, and quarterback Kersean Wilson had 134 yards passing, one TD run and one scoring pass … Greene has 1497 yards and 12 TDs on 228 carries to date. Wilson is 91-for-163 passing for 1385 yards and 15 TDs, and has 608 yards and 12 scores by land … RNE is averaging 318.8 offensive yards per game, and 6.1 yards per offensive play … The defense is allowing 242.4 yards per game.
Northwestern notes: There is no better example of how much good coaching can make a difference than at Northwestern. Jimmy “Moose” Wallace stepped down as the Trojans head coach after the 2004 season with a 187-53 record and two Big 16 state championships in 18 seasons at the NW helm. His replacement, Mike Allen, went 6-18 over the next two seasons, prompting a groundswell of support for Wallace to come back and turn things around. The impact was immediate. Northwestern went 12-2 a year ago and advanced to the Class 4A Division I semifinals, and enters this week’s quarterfinal clash with RNE with an 11-1 record – the lone loss coming against undefeated city rival South Point … Sophomore quarterback Justin Worley has been a sensation in his first year as a starter – completing 239 of 426 passes for 2819 yards and a state-leading 38 touchdowns. Three receivers have at least 54 catches on the books – Cordarrelle Patterson (57 catches-710 yards-13 TDs), Jared Neely (57-589-8) and Labris Adams (54-723-5) … Worley was 21-for-35 passing for 270 yards and four touchdowns in last week’s 42-7 rout of York in the first round of the playoffs. The first 19 Northwestern plays from scrimmage were passes. Julian Patton had three TD catches and Adams finished with seven receptions for 124 yards and one score.
Series history: The teams have split four previous encounters, and have one playoff win apiece in the series. RNE scored a 29-19 in the last playoff meeting in 1999.
