Defending SCISA champions Preston Busbee (112) and Charles Gray (119) lead Heathwood Hall into the 2008-09 wrestling season. The Highlanders finished third at the SCISA state meet.
“Preston and Charles are very talented, committed and athletic,” said coach Hank Wall. “It helps that they are each other’s drill partners in the practice room. They have both won several open tournaments in addition to SCISA events and I believe they can compete favorably with anyone in their weight class from any school in South Carolina.”
In addition to senior Busbee and junior Gray, five other returning veterans add depth to the Highlander lineup - senior Jack Moorman (160), junior Joseph Walker (145), sophomore Kyle Maitland (152) and freshmen Fripp Prioleau (125) and Harrison Penndarves (285).
“We had very high expectations this season as a team but we have also lost some wrestlers due to football injuries,” said Wall. “We have some outstanding and committed new wrestlers in our program, but unfortunately they are all relatively small and in the lighter weights. I am still waiting on to see if there are any big tough kids out there who might be willing to step up to the intensity and difficulty of the sport, but so far no one wants to take the wrestling challenge. We’ll just have to go with the outstanding committed kids we do have and give away three to four forfeits at each match. Notwithstanding the holes in our lineup, I am very optimistic about winning 4-6 individual SCISA titles this season if our kids keep working hard.”
