Palmetto Classic field features eight state champions

The annual Palmetto Classic wrestling tournament runs this weekend at Irmo with action beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Friday night. Saturday’s sessions start at 9 p.m. with the championship and third-place finals tentatively slated slated to begin at 3 p.m.

The 15-team field includes six of the Top 10 teams in Class 4A, including defending state champion Summerville and runner-up Rock Hill, and preseason No. 1 Fort Dorchester. The field also features five Top 10 ranked Midlands area teams – Dutch Fork (No. 5 in 4A), Irmo No. 6 in 4A), Chapin (No. 3 in 3A), Lugoff-Elgin (No. 4 in 3A) and Swansea (No. 8 in 3A).

A star-studded individual field includes eight wrestlers that have one at least one state championship during their career and eight wrestlers who have finished in second place at state along the way.

The breakdown by team:

Irmo – Kyle Manross (2nd at 119, 2008); Jimmy Carson (2nd at 285, 2008; 1st at 285 in SCISA, 2006).

Dutch Fork - George Holstead (1st at 130, 2008).

Swansea – Benjamin Willard (1st at 103, 2008).

Lugoff-Elgin – Justin McClester (2nd at 112, 2008; 2nd at 103, 2006).

Chapin – Barrett Owens (2nd at 112, 2008; 2nd at 103, 2007).

Summerville - Aaron Hansen (1st at 112, 2008); Eli Ashby (2nd at 130, 2008).

Fort Mill - Brandon Feix (1st at 103 in 2006),

Rock Hill - Weston Beck (1st at 103, 2008); Chad Beck (1st at 135, 2008); Seth Beck (2nd at 112, 2008).

Fort Dorchester - Seiji Borja (1st at 140, 2008); Wesley Dallas (2nd at 140, 2008; 2nd at 135, 2007)
