Lugoff-Elgin led all Midlands entries at the annual Palmetto State Classic wrestling tournament last weekend at Irmo. The Demons, ranked No. 4 in Class 3A by scmat.com, finished in fourth place with 138 points behind 4A powers Fort Dorchester, Rock Hill and Fort Mill.
And, the Demons did it without a single individual champion. Justin McClester, T.J. Branham and Will Graham all made it to the championship round, but had to settle for second-place prizes.
McClester, who is looking to close out his fine career with his first state championship, fell 7-1 in the 125-pound finale to Sonny Bergarin of Fort Dorchester. Graham, a two-time state qualifier who hopes to at least place in his final prep season, took a 10-0 hit in the 152 title bout from Fort Mill’s Jonathon Miskelly. Branham pinned his way to the finals, but was felled in the 103 finale by Summerville’s Jordan Wigger.
The three finalists had plenty of support from Tony Murphy, Cody Humphries, Zach Connell, Will Connell and Parker Singleton. Murphy and Humphries both went 4-1 in the tournament and claimed consolation championships at 119 and 185, respectively. The Connells were fourth-place finishers at 145 and 160, respectively. Singleton did not place, but had a 3-2 showing at 135.
