Irmo handed Ridge View its first loss of the girls basketball season on Tuesday night, downing the Blazers 50-45.
The host Yellow Jackets (4-1) trailed RV 24-23 at halftime, but put on what proved to be a decisive 16-7 burst in the third quarter. Brianna Stanton, who was averaging just 4.8 points a game in the first four games, led Irmo with 15 points and Sarah Green was right at her season average with nine points.
It’s a good thing Stanton stepped up because team scoring leaders Brooke McCants and Ta’rea Yates had off nights. McCants and Yates both average 11 points a game, but this time McCants was a bit off with eight points, while Yates managed just three.
Irmo opened the season by winning the Claw Classic championship at Chapin for the second year in a row. Yates was named the tournament MVP, while McCants and Green made the all-tournament team.
