RNE wrestlers off to Hillcrest this weekend

Richland Northeast turned in a competitive showing at the Palmetto State Classsic wrestling tournament at Irmo, despite having just seven entries. The Cavaliers cumulative individual record was 12-11, and James Bethel and Robert Footman reached the championship finals.

RNE heads to the Upstate this weekend to take part in the Ram Invitational at Hillcrest High in Simpsonville.

Bethel pinned Dutch Fork’s Zach Bregovi and nipped Charles Ballard of Rock Hill in three overtimes to advance to the finals. He fell to Segii Borja of Fort Dorchester 17-7 in the title bout.

Footman was pinned by Dutch Fork’s T.J. Cayruth in the 215 final after dispatching Summerville’s Brandon Johnson 8-0 in his opener and pinning Swansea’s Jason Magnuson in 43 seconds in the semifinals.

Lance Waters (103), Mike Trapp (135), Joel Jackson (140) and heavyweight William Boneparte all turned in 2-2 records at the tournament.
