RV boys rally in second half to pick up first win

Ridge View rallied in the second half to secure its first boys basketball win of the season on Wednesday night at Dutch Fork, The Blazers, ranked No. 2 in Class 4A in the SCBCA preseason polls, overcame a 30-22 halftime deficit to down the host Silver Foxes 61-54 to improve their record to 1-3.

“I was extremely disappointed in our second quarter effort,” said RV coach John Combs.

“We are a team that wants to play with an extremely high level of energy, but after the first half was over it felt like we had the energy of a morgue. You have to give a lot of credit to Dutch Fork more making us play that way. The coaching staff challenged the team at the half to come out and play with more energy and simply play as they have been coached to do. As disappointed as I was with our second quarter effort, I was just as impressed with way we came out and played the 3rd quarter—we were active on defense and unselfish on offense. I honestly questioned if we had the toughness to come back in the second half. Considering we were 0-3 on the year, and tie in the fact that we just lost a tough physical game at Irmo the night before and then being down 8 points at half to a good team at their gym, it did not look good, but us. But the guys in the second half showed some toughness and togetherness I had not yet seen this year. It was simply very good for us to get a win.”

Michael Green ended up as the RV scoring leading, pumping in a career-high 19 points. Jarvis Davis added 17 points to the cause, while Kelvin Warr and Nay’Quan Flemming chipped in eight points apiece.

“Michael Green with out question had the best game of his career,” said Combs “He was active on defense blocking shots, getting offensive and defensive rebounds, and he was also a scoring threat for us tonight. Nay’Quan Fleming, who is less than a month removed from the football field, gave a huge lift off the bench offensively and defensively. I am proud the way he has progressed over the past couple of weeks.”

The Blazers out-scored DF 39-24 in the second half, but needed a late spurt to finally put away the Silver Foxes. Ridge View had a late eight-point edge, but a 3-pointer by DF standout E.J. Mills cut the Blazers advantage to 57-54. Transition baskets by Davis and Flemming down the stretch finally put the verdict on ice.

Errick Bethel led Dutch Fork with 13 points. Mills and Berkely Cooper scored nine points each.

Ridge View plays Calhoun County on Friday night in St. Matthews. The Class 1A powerhouse Saints have won 79 games in a row.
