James Bethel finished first at 145 pounds and Richland Northeast placed fifth at the Ram Invitational wrestling tournament last weekend in Simpsonville.
The Cavaliers scored 88.5 points to finish in the upper half of the 11-team field. Rock Hill was the tournament champion with 197 points, followed by host Hillcrest (191.5), Dorman (188) and Laurens (101).
“I thought the kids wrestled OK, but we are still way out of shape,” said RNE coach Richard Bonneville.
Six Cavaliers made it to the place rounds with Bethel and Robert Footman advancing to the championship finals for the second week in a row. Both had second-place finishes at Irmo’s Palmetto State Classic event on Dec. 6. This time, Bethel claimed a title, while Footman end up with runner-up honors at 215 again.
