Irmo opens the Region 5-4A basketball campaign Tuesday at home against Orangeburg-Wilkinson.
Tim Whipple’s boys team is off to a 6-0 start, and has been quite productive offensively in the early going. Surprisingly, the Yellow Jackets are averaging 72.2 points a game to date, while and the defensive average is much more Irmo-like at 57.0.
Robbie Brunson has been red-hot at the outset of the season, and leads the Jackets in both scoring (17.2 ppg) and rebounding (7.3 rpg). He has had plenty of solid support from Jeremy Clinkscales (10.5 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 2,3 spg, 2.2 apg), Jordan Roper (9.3 ppg, 3.3 apg), Josh Clinkscales (8.3 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 2.3 spg), Daniel Huguenin (7.3 ppg, 2.3 apg) and DeAndrei Carson (6.7 ppg, 4.5 rpg).

In the girls opener, the visiting Bruins are off to a 4-0 start, winning by an averaged of 31.2 points. O-W recently whipped up on Lake Marion by a 70-7 count.
The challenge for Irmo will be how to deal with the Bruins twin towers inside. Erika Sumter, a 6-2 senior center, is averaging 13.8 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.8 steals. Shawanda Hampton, a 6-0 senior center, is averaging 11.5 points and 6.8 rebounds.
The Yellow Jackets (4-2) opened the season by winning the championship at Chapin’s Claw Classic preseason tournament for the second year in a row. Irmo is 1-2 in regular-season play, losing twice by big margins to Spring Valley.
Junior point guard Brooke McCants sets the pace for Irmo. She is averaging 10.7 points and 2.7 assists a game. Senior guard Ta’rea Yates and 6-2 junior Sarah Green have also played well. Yates is averaging 9.5 ppg, while Green is at 8.8 ppg and leads the team with a 5.5 rebounding average. Junior guard Brianna Stanton is chipping in 7.5 ppg.
