B.J. Griggs became the first Mid-Carolina wrestler to win a tournament championship last weekend at the Cardinal Newman Christmas Classic. The Rebels are in their inaugural mat campaign under coach Kyle Cannon.
Griggs rolled to the title in the 215-pound weight class with a 3-0 record and a win over North Central’s Zac Hall. Griggs topped Zev Goodman of Chris School in the semifinals after getting past Seth Shouse of Newberry County rival Whitmire in the quarterfinals.
Drew Ricard was the other Rebel to place at the event, going 2-2 to earn fourth place at 103.
Mid-Carolina had a surprisingly good 3-3 dual meet record entering their first-ever tournament setting.

Cannon is no stranger to starting a program from scratch. He took on the same task at Whitmire.
