Fate has not been kind to the Richland Northeast boys basketball team of late.
More to the point, injuries are taking a toll again. The Cavaliers could be without three regulars when they travel to face Aiken for a Region 5-4A contest on Tuesday. C.J. Wilson is out with a broken foot, and coach Jason Powell said Rashawn Carroll and Dewayne Desira are both questionable for Tuesday’s game. Carroll and Desira are both on the mend after suffering high ankle sprains.
“The injury bug has bitten us hard for the second season in a row,” sighed Powell.
Still, RNE is off to a solid 9-4 start and stands at 1-1 in region matters. The Cavaliers played two top-flight tournaments during the first month of the campaign, posting a third-place division finish at the Chick-fil-A Classic prior to Christmas.

“I feel like we’ve proven we can play with the top teams in the nation,” said Powell. “Two of our losses have come against nationally-ranked teams (Pinewood Prep and Orlando Christian Prep). But we have some guys step up now because of our injury situation.”
Carroll is averaging 10.1 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. Malcom Rhett is averaging 9.6 points and 9.3 rebounds.
