Gilbert returns to the mats tonight when neighboring Pelion and Region 3-2A foe Newberry come calling for a triangular meet, starting at 6 p.m.
The Indians went 5-4 in dual matches and enjoyed two outstanding tournament performances in December prior to the holiday break. Gilbert won its first-ever tournament championship at Cardinal Newman, and finished second at the Taco Bell Invitational at Spring Valley.
Gilbert nipped Pelion in dramatic fashion on Dec. 11, 38-36, thanks to a pin by heavyweight Leon Watts in the final bout of the match.
Jeff Hoover and Zack Kennedy have been the Indians headliners. Hoover sports a 20-1 record at 171 pounds, and claimed two tournament titles in December. Kennedy is 20-1 with his only loss coming against Dutch Fork’s George Holestead, a defending Class 4A state champion, in the 135 final at Taco Bell.
All but one of Gilbert’s varsity regulars posted winning records in December, including Austin Amick (10-5 at 119), David Amick (11-6 at 125), Matt Risinger (12-5 at 130), Justin Miller (17-4 at 140), Drew Neff (13-3 at 152), Matt Chapman (11-5 at 160), Zak Watkins (12-3 at 215 and the heavyweight trio of Watts (5-1), Cody Day (9-3) and Chris McGee (5-0).
The Indians are entered in the Greenwood Invitational on Saturday.
