Senior Shawn Armstrong remained unbeaten at 189 pounds as Sumter tuned up for the Blue Devil Invitational tournament this weekend at Dreher by sweeping Camden and Richland Northeast in a triangular meet Tuesday at home.

Armstrong, ranked No. 6 individually in Class 4A, went 2-0 with two pins to up his season record to 26-0. He was the lone Gamecocks champion at the 32-team Mayplant Credit Union Classic at Lugoff-Elgin prior to the holiday break.

The Gamecocks, ranked 14th in 4A by scmat.com, improved to 19-6 in dual matches by handily dispatching RNE 54-21 and Camden 54-19.

Freshman Peter Hacket (103), sophomore Korey Paige (119), sophomore Josh Anderson (125), sophomore Matt Devine (130), senior Josh Sullivan (152), sophomore Trevor Jahnke (215) and senior heavyweight Mike Miller also had individual sweeps. Like Armstrong, Hackett, Devine and Miller had two wins via fall.

Devine boasts a 21-6 record to date. Senior Andrew Lovice, who did not wrestle last night, is 23-7 at 140. Sophomore Hayden Raabe is 20-11 at 145. Sullivan, who was named the outstanding wrestler at last weekend’s Ram Rumble in Chesterfield, stands at 27-4 and is ranked No. 5 in his weight division. Miller is still unranked, but his 26-4 record and consolation title run at the L-E tournament may get him some notice.
