Eau Claire’s basketball teams formally join Class 2A Friday night at home when Andrew Jackson comes calling in the first round of the Region 4-2A campaign.
Lee Central visits Columbia and Keenan hosts Central of Pageland in the other region twinbills.
The EC girls sport a 13-2 record and the No. 1 ranking in the classification. The Shamrocks two setbacks have been against mighty Lower Richland.
Eau Claire is averaging 54 points a game, but has just one player averaging double-digits – sophomore guard Amelia Carrie is at 10.7 ppg. The balanced attack makes EC a tough team to defend. Carrie receives plenty of support from Breonda Shannon (8.8 ppg), Eboni Ross (7.2 ppg) and Janea Stevenson (6.8 ppg). Shannon, Ross and Stevenson combined for an average of 18 rebounds a game.
Keenan swept region titles last season in a different alignment, and the Raider girls went on to claim the state championship. Ironically, Keenan defeated Lee Central 54-50 in last season’s state title bout, and the teams find themselves as region rivals this time around.
The Keenan boys have yet to put it together on a consistent basis, but are still considered to be the team to beat. The Raiders get a good test right off the bat against a good Eagles squad featuring Justice Cunningham (18.4 ppg, 12.2 rpg).
